"I am honored to be present in the ceremony your diploma today at one of the most prestigious universities in the world. I have never had a college degree. Must confess I approached this was almost with a graduation concert. I want to tell you three stories about my life. Not much,. Just three stories.
The first story is about connecting the dots (connect the events)I left Reed College after the first six months, but then enroll an additional 18 months before actually leaving the school. So, why I quit school?
Everything as it should be available from before I was born. My mother was a student, she was not married and decided to send me for adoption. She thought that I should be nurtured by those who have graduated from college so I arranged to talk to a lawyer's wife on the day of birth. However, things changed at the last minute because they want to get a girl than me.
So, my adoptive parents, when it is in the queue list, received a phone call at midnight that: "We have a son, do not expect, grandparents may want to take care of it you? " and they answered: "Sure." My biological mother later found out my mother had never graduated from college but my father had not even graduated from high school. She refused to sign the papers given and received only agreed a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.
17 years later, I actually went to college. But I innocently choose expensive school near Stanford University that. The total savings to put on my parents pay for my tuition. After 6 months, I found it was not effective. I have no idea what to do in my life and did not understand the university will help me realize that how. There, I spent all the money that their parents life savings. So I left with the belief that things will stabilize at all. It's scary moments, but in retrospect, that was a wise decision in my best. I started out the required courses that I found interesting and I just enrolled subjects of interest.
I have no power in the dorm, I slept on the floor of your friends, bring fresh water bottle change taking 5 cents to buy food and walk a few miles on Sunday night to get a good meal a week at camp Hare Krishna. What I mean is that I later realized to pursue that passion and satisfy their curiosity is invaluable.
I'll tell you one example: Reed College when it is probably best taught in the art of calligraphy in the United States. Across campus is the poster, painting with the beautiful handwriting. Since I've left school, I decided to enroll in writing classes to learn how they do it. I learned to transform the strokes, the distance between the characters, the character italic, bold. This is the subject of art and historical science can not capture and I found it amazing.
These things that seem to have little practical application in my life. But 10 years later, when we designed the Macintosh computer, like everything in my back. And we put it on the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful fonts. If I had not quit school just to follow a unique key that Macs will never be equipped with multiple typefaces or proportionally on the distance of such words (and later Windows was copied). If I had not left school, I probably will never attend calligraphy and computer may not get rich writing system today.
Of course, we can not connect the markers the future, you can just hook them when looking back. So be sure that the dots, the events in your life on this side or the other will affect your future. You must have faith in something - courage, fate, life, destiny or whatever - thinking that has made the difference in my life.
The second story is about love and lossI am fortunate to have realized what I loved from his youth. Woz (Steve Wozniak) and founder of Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard for 10 years and developed from a garage into a company worth $ 2 billion with 4,000 employees. We launched creations - Macintosh - when I turned 30.
Then I was fired. Why you can be fired at just the company you founded? Apple has hired someone who I think is good enough to run the company with her and the first year, things have gone well. But then, the vision of our future different and can not merge. Meanwhile, the board sided with him. At age 30, I moved out. What I pursue life has disappeared, it was destroyed.
I do not know what to do in the next months. I felt like I dropped a stick in the game lost when people just gave it to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce, sorry for trying to make things worse. I also thought about giving up. But things started to drag me back. I still love what I do. The turning point in Apple does not change who I am. I declined, but I still love. So I decided to start over.
When I did not realize it, but it turned out being fired is the best thing for me. The pressure to maintain the success has been replaced by gentle spirit of a beginner and not sure what will happen. It freed me to enter the most creative period of his life.
In the next five years, I founded another company, NeXT and Pixar and called the woman in love with a wonderful, who later became my wife. Pixar to create movies from the first computer graphics in the world - Toy Story and is currently the animation studio's most successful global. Apple bought NeXT, I returned to my technology developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's revival. Me and my wife Laurene has a wonderful family life.
